Risk Level Assignment
The Applicant Risk Scoring functionality lets you define risk level thresholds and automate risk level assignment after the score is calculated.
Risk levels, in turn, allow you to group applicants and apply various policies, both within Sumsub and on your own platform.
By relying on a predefined algorithm, you streamline decision-making, reduce human bias, and enhance operational efficiency.
You can also program your system to automatically adhere to the latest legal and industry regulations, ensuring fair and standardized treatment for all applicants.
How Risk Level Assignment works
You can use the Sumsub risk matrix to set up risk levels that match your specific scoring model.
When the system calculates or updates an applicant's risk score, it assigns a risk level based on your selected thresholds. However, you can always manually override the system's decision, lock a specific level, or reevaluate your scoring settings.
Additionally, a risk level can be assigned as a part of specific workflow or through the API as a signal from your own system.
Get started with automated Risk Level Assignment
To set up risk level assignment:
- Enable and set up applicant risk scoring as described in this article.
- In the Dashboard, navigate to Transactions and Travel Rule → Settings → Applicant Risk Scoring.
- In the Risk Levels section, click Set up.
- Adjust the names, score thresholds, and tags for each level. You can use the provided matrix or design your own custom levels and values.
- Click Set up.
Now, if one or more scoring rules are triggered and the corresponding tag scores are added to the applicant’s total, the system will automatically assign the matching risk level.
To view applicant risk scoring results, follow the steps outlined in this article.
To manage risk scoring results:
- Navigate to the Applicants page and open either the Individuals or Companies tab.
- Select the applicant whose level you want to manage.
- Navigate to the Transactions section of the applicant's profile and locate the Risk score breakdown section (alternatively, click the score in the header of the applicant's page).
- Click Manage applicant risk scoring tags to manually adjust the weight of the tags used for scoring.
- Click Override to manually lock or unlock the selected risk level for a specific period.
Important
- Locking a level prevents it from changing automatically, though the underlying risk score will still be recalculated.
- Changes made to risk level thresholds on the Applicant Risk Scoring settings page do not automatically update previously scored applicants. Their risk levels are only recalculated when a new scoring event occurs for that specific applicant.
