Risk Level Assignment
Use risk scores to define an applicant's risk level.
The Applicant Risk Scoring functionality lets you define risk level thresholds and automate risk level assignment after the score is calculated.
Risk levels, in turn, allow you to group applicants and apply various policies, both within Sumsub and on your own platform.
By relying on a predefined algorithm, you streamline decision-making, reduce human bias, and enhance operational efficiency.
You can also program your system to automatically adhere to the latest legal and industry regulations, ensuring fair and standardized treatment for all applicants.
How Risk Level Assignment works
You can use the Sumsub risk matrix to set up risk levels that match your specific scoring model.
When the system calculates or updates an applicant's risk score, it assigns a risk level based on your selected thresholds. However, you can always manually override the system's decision, lock a specific level, or reevaluate your scoring settings.
Additionally, a risk level can be assigned as a part of specific workflow or through the API as a signal from your own system.
Get started with automated Risk Level Assignment
To manage applicant risk scoring settings, you need the Manage applicant risk scoring settings permission.
To set up risk level assignment:
- Enable and set up applicant risk scoring as described in this article.
- In the Dashboard, navigate to Transactions and Travel Rule → Settings → Applicant Risk Scoring.
- In the Risk Levels section, click Set up.
- Adjust the names, score thresholds, and tags for each level. You can use the provided matrix or design your own custom levels and values.
- Click Set up.
Note
You can configure up to 16 risk levels. Once you reach this limit, the Add level and Set up/Save buttons are disabled.
Existing configurations with more than 16 levels are still displayed but cannot be re-saved until you remove the extras.
Score thresholds above 100 can currently be created only through the API. When any level's score exceeds 100, the slider becomes read-only and a notice asks you to adjust the values in the table.
Now, if one or more scoring rules are triggered and the corresponding tag scores are added to the applicant’s total, the system will automatically assign the matching risk level.
The changes you make to your risk matrix do not apply to the applicants that are already scored.
Manage risk scoring results
To manage the risk scoring results, navigate to the Applicant's page and open the target profile.
In the Risk Scoring Breakdown section you can:
- Override the risk level manually — set a specific level and optionally lock it from automatic re-evaluation for a defined period.
- Unlock the override — restore automatic evaluation.
- Force rescore — re-evaluate risk score and risk level according to the actual risk matrix using the adjusted weights to the current matrix.
