Handle verification results

Topics in this section cover how to review, manage, and act on verification results — both through the Dashboard and via API.

Every applicant in Sumsub has a status that reflects their current verification state, from Documents requested (awaiting submission) through Pending (under review) to a final outcome: Approved, Rejected, or Resubmission requested. Intermediate statuses such as Requires action and Awaiting service handle manual review queues and long-running external processes. You can monitor status changes directly in the Dashboard or receive them programmatically via webhooks.

When a verification completes, Sumsub delivers the result through the applicantReviewed webhook. The reviewAnswer field indicates the outcome — GREEN for approval, RED for rejection. On a RED result, the reviewRejectType field specifies whether the rejection is final (FINAL) or whether the applicant may resubmit (RETRY), and the rejectLabels array identifies the specific rejection reasons. Rejection labels and explanatory buttons help both API consumers and Dashboard reviewers understand why an applicant did not pass verification.

Applicant profiles in the Dashboard support a wide range of management actions: manual approval or rejection, profile reset, deactivation, document management, verification level changes, blocklisting, and tag assignment. Risk labels — covering email, phone, device, selfie, AML, cross-check, person, and company signals — are assigned during verification to surface potential fraud indicators. These labels do not affect verification outcomes by default but can be wired into automated workflows to trigger manual reviews or rejections.

For reporting and compliance purposes, the Custom CSV Export feature lets you export large volumes of filtered applicant data or AML case data from the Dashboard. Exports support up to one million records without date restrictions; larger exports are limited to a one-year date range. Reports are retained for 30 days. The rejection filter on the Applicants page lets you quickly surface and categorize rejected applicants by rejection tag.
