Set up Travel Rule
Sumsub guided onboarding Travel Rule experience allows you to go through a unified lifecycle that ensures your account is correctly configured to meet regulatory needs and business operations.
You can configure, manage and test your integration from one place — Sumsub Dashboard. We provide a built-in verification experience directly in the product. You do not have to manage external registration forms or links.
Set up Travel Rule
To access the setup journey in the Dashboard:
- Navigate to Transactions and Travel Rule → Settings → Set up Travel Rule.
- Click Start setup.
- Perform the steps as described below to integrate the Sumsub Travel Rule into your operations.
Step 1: Create VASP
Establish your presence in the ecosystem by creating your VASP profile:
- Define your VASP name and select its type from the drop-down list.
- Upload your VASP logo.
Once your application is approved, your entity becomes discoverable by other VASPs, enabling seamless data exchange.
Step 2: Fill in verification form
Complete the necessary identity and business checks:
- Accept the Sumsub Travel Rule Ecosystem Agreement by selecting the corresponding checkbox.
- Provide your company registration details.
- Fill in your company email.
Step 3: Pass due diligence
Perform VASP Due Diligence to build trust with other financial institutions.
This step is optional, but we recommend completing it to:
- Strengthen your counterparty relationships.
- Ensure smooth transaction flows with external protocols.
Step 4: Customize setup
At this stage, you need to fill up a targeted questionnaire to capture your specific requirements and automatically configure your environment.
Specify the following:
- Regulatory scope — define your jurisdiction (for instance, EU, UK, etc.).
- Transaction scope and data exchange — specify the data points you need to collect and share.
- Risk, compliance and exception handling — set up rules for timeouts and how to handle pending or non-compliant transactions. For more information on Travel Rule settings, see this article.
- Wallet ownership and address management — define your logic for wallet address ownership verification.
NoteBased on your answers, our system automatically updates your Travel Rule settings and rule engine, reducing manual configuration errors.
Step 5: Complete to-do list
Once your logic is defined, the system generates an actionable Integration Checklist. This checklist outlines the exact steps required to complete your Travel Rule integration.
- Generate secure credentials for API access.
- Set up webhooks — real-time notifications for transaction status updates.
- Integrate the following flows for successful data exchanges:
- Some wallets might be identified as unhosted if they are not associated with any known VASP. For such cases, you may need to connect Sumsub WebSDK.
Sandbox testing
As a final step, you will be prompted to run a test data exchange transaction in a safe environment to verify the setup before going live.
Switch to Sandbox mode and create a data exchange transaction in the Dashboard with the pre-defined transaction data from this table.
If you want to create data exchange transactions manually on production, switch from Sandbox mode to submit actual data exchange transactions in the Dashboard:
- On the Transactions page, click Create transaction manually and select the applicant.
- Choose the data exchange transaction type and fill in the required data.
Once you completed the checklist, click Finish the setup to save your configuration.
Wallet Address Book
To fully ensure the delivery of deposit Travel Rule data exchange transaction, import wallet addresses of your applicants and submit identifiable user information, such as the applicant ID or unique identifier.
