EU Digital Identity Wallet Prototype

Explore the EU Digital Identity Wallet verification flow in Sandbox ahead of its rollout across the European Union.

The EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW) is a state-backed digital identity wallet that every EU Member State must offer to its citizens and residents under eIDAS 2.0. With the wallet, users can:

  • Store and manage their verified identity data and other digital credentials.
  • Prove their identity across EU Member States.
  • Share verified attributes with online services and control what information is disclosed.

The core credential in the wallet is Person Identification Data (PID), issued by or on behalf of a Member State at a High Level of Assurance (LoA). Instead of uploading identity documents, the applicant presents their PID from the wallet.

Once the wallets are available, banks, financial services, and other businesses that must use strong user authentication will be required to accept the EUDIW at the user's request.

The Sumsub EUDIW Prototype lets you go through this flow end to end and test how it fits into your verification flows before the rollout.

Important

The EUDIW Prototype is available in Sandbox only. It works with test wallets and test data and cannot be used to verify real applicants.

Use cases

The prototype helps businesses that operate in the EU prepare for accepting the EU Digital Identity Wallet under eIDAS 2.0. With it, you can:

  • Go through the EUDIW verification flow as an applicant, using a test wallet.
  • Add EUDIW to your verification levels and configure fallback to other verification methods.
  • Review which PID data is returned and how it appears in the applicant profile and via API.

Solution benefits

  • High assurance. The EUDIW framework is designed to provide government-issued identity data at a High Level of Assurance (LoA) under eIDAS 2.0.
  • Privacy by design. With selective disclosure, the wallet shares only the requested data fields, never the full wallet content.
  • Trusted data. Identity data in the wallet is cryptographically signed by the issuer and is validated upon presentation.
  • Effortless user experience. Applicants verify in a few taps, with no document photos required.
  • Seamless integration. EUDIW works as a regular Non-Doc verification option through your existing Web or Mobile SDK integration.
  • Flexible flows. Combine EUDIW with other verification steps, such as Liveness, and redirect applicants to document-based or other Non-Doc verification in case of failure using Workflow Builder.
  • Cross-border by design. EUDIW is a harmonised framework across all EU Member States, designed to replace a patchwork of national eID schemes with one common standard. You can enable the prototype for one, several, or all 27 EU countries.

How EUDIW Prototype work

The EUDIW verification flow includes the following steps:

  1. An applicant selects EU Digital Identity Wallet as the verification method.
  2. Sumsub initiates a request for the applicant's PID and redirects the applicant to open their wallet:
    1. Same device. The applicant taps a link that opens the wallet app on the same device.
    2. Cross device. The applicant scans a QR code with the wallet app on their mobile device.
  3. In the wallet, the applicant reviews the data request and consents to share their PID. The wallet shares only the requested data fields.
  4. The applicant returns to the verification flow, and Sumsub retrieves the validated PID data.
  5. Sumsub maps the PID data to the applicant profile. The verification result is displayed in the Dashboard, like other Non-Doc verification checks, and the applicant completes the verification flow.

EUDIW verification requirements

To go through EUDIW verification in Sandbox, you need:

  • The EUDI reference wallet with a test PID. The wallet is distributed via Apple TestFlight, so it can be installed on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac only.
  • A stable internet connection.

The verification flow itself can be started on any device supported by WebSDK or MobileSDK. For the mobile flow, your application must use MobileSDK version 1.40.1 or later.

Get started with EUDIW verification

To start testing EUDIW Prototype:

  1. Contact your Customer Success Manager to enable EUDIW Prototype in Sandbox.
  2. Integrate with the Sumsub WebSDK and/or iOS MobileSDK.
  3. Set up a verification level with a Non-Doc step and add Demo EU Digital Identity Wallet as a verification option for one, several, or all 27 EU countries.
  4. Optionally, use Workflow Builder to redirect applicants to document-based or other Non-Doc verification in case of failure.
  5. Set up a test wallet and go through the verification flow in Sandbox mode

If you need help with any of these steps, contact your Customer Success Manager or our Support team.

Review EUDIW verification results

To check the verification results, navigate to the Applicant Data tab of a particular applicant who passed EUDIW verification and scroll down to the Extracted data section. The following information will be extracted during the check*:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Issuing authority
  • Issuing country (if available)
  • Expiry date

*The outlined data scope represents a basic identity verification and KYC check scenario associated with the current Prototype version. In the EUDIW framework, each Relying Party may register and request a specific dataset per use case proven by a corresponding Legal basis; the full list of PID fields is listed in the PID rulebook (part of the EUDIW Architecture Reference Framework).

EUDIW Prototype FAQ

Find the most frequently asked questions about the EUDIW Prototype.

Are applicants required to use the EUDIW?

No. Using the wallet is voluntary for citizens and residents. Under eIDAS 2.0, certain businesses must accept the wallet when a user chooses to present it, but users are not required to use it.

How is EUDIW different from national eID schemes?

National eID schemes differ from country to country and are not fully interoperable. EUDIW is a harmonised framework across the EU, built on common data formats and protocols for cross-border use and selective disclosure.

Can I use EUDIW verification in Production?

No. The prototype is available in Sandbox only and works with test wallets and test data. It cannot be used to verify real applicants.

Why is EUDIW verification temporarily unavailable?

The EUDIW test infrastructure is under active development and changes frequently. As a result, the verification flow may be temporarily unavailable until the infrastructure is updated.

What happens if an applicant does not have a wallet or the verification fails?

You can use Workflow Builder or Verification level configuration to redirect applicants to document-based or other Non-Doc verification.

Who issues the PID?

PID is issued by or on behalf of EU Member States’ authorities. In Sandbox, test PIDs are issued via the EUDI test infrastructure.

Will my current verification methods still work?

Yes. EUDIW verification is added as an additional verification option and does not replace other verification methods in your levels.
