# Manage rules

Manage rules effectively.

This page covers the operations available for managing transaction monitoring rules in the Dashboard: installing rules from the library, activating or deactivating them, testing rules without affecting live transactions, publishing rules from Sandbox to Production, muting repeated alerts, deleting and restoring rules, duplicating existing rules, and reviewing version history.

# Install rules

To install rules from the rules library:

1. In the Dashboard, open the [Rules library](https://cockpit.sumsub.com/checkus#/kyt/rulesManager/rulesLibrary) page.
2. Find the rule bundle that contains the rules you need.
3. On the right of the rule name, select **Install rule**.

> To install all rules in the bundle, click **Install bundle**. To install specific rules, select them in the table and click **Install selected rules**.

 ### Note

 - Built-in pre-scoring rules are read-only and cannot be edited.
 - All rules that you install remain in Test mode until you [activate them](https://docs.sumsub.com/sumsub/docs/manage-rules#activate-and-deactivate-rules). Test mode allows rules to be [tested](https://docs.sumsub.com/sumsub/docs/tm-testing) without affecting the transaction final score or status.

## Group rules by use case

When use cases are enabled for your account, the **Rules library** groups rules by use case instead of by bundle. For each use case:

* The group header shows the use-case name and an X of Y rules installed counter.
* If you have the **Manage KYT rules** <Anchor target="_blank" href="doc:user-roles#permissions">permission</Anchor>, an **Install use case** button installs every remaining rule in that use case at once.
* Once every rule in a use case is installed, the header shows an Installed status instead of the button.
* Groups with more than three rules are collapsed to the first three.

A **Use cases** column and a multi-select **Use cases** filter are also available in both the **Rules library** and **Installed rules** tables.

# Activate and deactivate rules

To activate and deactivate rules:

1. In the Dashboard, open the [Installed rules](https://cockpit.sumsub.com/checkus#/kyt/rulesManager/rulesList) page.
2. Find the rules that you want to activate or deactivate, and in the **Status** column, select **Active** — to use the selected rule during monitoring or **Inactive** — to cease the rule usage.

Alternatively, you can select rules in the table, and at the bottom of the page, click **Activate rule** or **Deactivate rule**.

# Rules in Test mode

Test mode allows you to test the risk matrix or check how the newly created rule or condition would affect your transactions without impacting the transaction status or risk score. Test results are displayed in real time, allowing you to easily calibrate your risk policy or rules.

To enable test mode:

1. In the Dashboard, open the [Installed rules](https://cockpit.sumsub.com/checkus#/kyt/rulesManager/rulesList) page.
2. Find the rules that you want to test, and in the **Status** column, select **Test mode**.

For more information about testing, see [this article](https://docs.sumsub.com/sumsub/docs/tm-testing).

# Copy rules from Sandbox to Production

Rules can be created, configured, and tested in Sandbox or Test mode without affecting Production.

To make a configured rule live, you must copy it to Production. Click **Publish to production **at the bottom of the screen, and the rule will be created in Production in Test mode.

If a rule with the same name already exists in Production, the published rule will be added as a new copy, for example, **My Rule \[1]**.

 ### Note

The **Publish to production** button is displayed in Sandbox mode only. It is also not available for sandbox-only license keys, which have no Production environment.

# Mute rules for selected period

In some AML scenarios, only the first rule alert matters, as it marks the point of concern. Muting rules allows you to suppress repeated rule alerts for the same applicant and prevent risk score accumulation.

You can mute a rule at the transaction level and at the rule settings level.

Rule-level muting works automatically for any applicant when the target rule is triggered for the first time after muting is set up. It prevents alerts on all subsequent matches for the selected applicant.

Transaction-level muting silences rule alerts for a specific applicant for the first transaction that triggered the rule and all subsequent transactions initiated by this applicant directly from a matched transaction with optional data filters.

In both cases the information about the triggered rules is still <Anchor target="_blank" href="doc:review-aml-cases">added to a case.</Anchor>

## Rule-level muting

To mute a rule at the rule settings level:

1. In the Dashboard, navigate to the [Installed rules](https://cockpit.sumsub.com/checkus/kyt/rulesManager/rulesList) page or [Rules library](https://cockpit.sumsub.com/checkus/kyt/rulesManager/rulesLibrary), open the rule you want to mute, and click **Edit rule** in the upper-right corner of the screen.
2. In the **Configurations **section on the right select the **Mute** box.
3. Adjust the mute period.
4. Save your changes.
